Dog-urine spots:
High concentration of nitrogen “burns” blades.
Remedies:
Dilute urine by watering the spot immediately after. Establish an area with wood-chip mulch and train your dog to urinate there only.

Compacted soil:
Chokes root growth, encourages crabgrass and spurge weed.
Remedies:
Break up soil with a pitchfork in small areas and with a core aerator in large areas. Add compost to lighten soil.

Moles:
Raised tunnels just beneath the lawn’s surface are a sure sign of moles looking for a meal of earthworms and grubs.
Remedies:
Repel them by treating tunnels with castor-oil pellets. Discourage grubs with increased watering and by adding beneficial nematodes to soil.
Turf cost
When it comes to getting a thick, healthy lawn, nothing beats sod for instant gratification. Sure, it costs a bit more: about $625 to cover a 1,000-square-foot backyard (double that installed). But lay it right and in a couple of weeks you’ve got a dense, well-established lawn that’s naturally resistant to weeds, diseases, and pest infestations.

Fake lawns
An artificial lawn, also known as artificial grass, or artificial turf, is a maintenance free alternative to grass. While some purists may argue that an artificial grass lawn can’t compare to the real thing, it does have a number of benefits over grass. Quite simply, a synthetic lawn requires almost no upkeep and doesn’t require water, fertilizer or pesticide treatments, making it an environmentally friendly choice.

Artificial Lawn Costs

Artificial lawn prices start at $4 to $10 per square foot for do it yourself installation. For a 1000 square foot area, this works out to a total artificial lawn cost of $4000 to $10,000. It is recommended to create a 2-4 inch base of crushed stone, which costs around $15-$25 per ton. A 1000 square foot lawn will need about 5 tons at a total cost of about $100. Renting a cement compactor, a sod cutter and a drop spreader aren’t necessary, but will make the job easier.
Installation will cost an additional $3-$5 per square foot. For a 1000 square foot lawn, this brings the total cost up to around $8000 using cheaper materials, and $14,000 for premium artificial turf lawn.
A typical installation of artificial grass includes first removing all grass, roots, stones and other debris from the area of installation. The area should be flattened and smoothed before a layer of crushed rock is applied. The rocks should also be made as level as possible. Then, the material is laid over the area and cut to size. After that the turf is nailed down at 12” intervals around the edges. A few nails should also be added near the center. The next step is to apply an infill such as sand, rubber or a mix of the two to keep the turf upright and protect it from weather and pet waste. Finally, the turf is brushed with a stiff broom to give it a full and solid look.
Routine maintenance for homeowners with pets includes hosing the area down and occasionally applying a mild detergent. It may also need to be raked or swept from time to time to keep it looking clean and full.
Because synthetic grass doesn’t need to be mowed, watered or fertilized, it saves money over time and in many cases can pay for itself an average 10-15 year life span.
Purchasing wholesale artificial lawn from a distributor such as Turf Outlet is cheaper, although it may only be practical for contractors who need big amounts or homeowners with very large lawns.

It is very important when planting a new lawn that you choose a grass seed blend that is of high quality. The first thing you want to ensure is the grass seed has a high germination rate coupled with low weed seed, other crop, and inert matter rates. These rates are all expressed as percentages on the label when you buy grass seed. You do not want to buy grass seed with a germination rate lower than 80% and the crop, weed, and inert matter should be as close to 0.00% as possible. You can be assured when you buy grass seed from Outsidepride.com you are purchasing the highest quality grass seed available. The second thing you want to ensure is the varieties of grass seed which are in the blend are newer varieties and the proper varieties for the blend. Many blends which are “economical” are that way simple due to the fact they contain very old varieties and grasses such as annual ryegrass are thrown in to the blend to cut the price down. Old varieties or varieties which should not be in the blend can make for an unsightly lawn, a lawn that does not wear well, a lawn that is prone to disease and fungus, and a lawn that you will end up replacing. The grasses are all newer varieties carefully selected to work together with the latest generation of breeding technology to ensure the best quality available.
Grass Seed Selection
Choosing the right grass seed for your area can be of paramount importance. A good place to start if you do not know which grass seed is right for your area is to contact your county extension agency. We have compiled a list of all the state agencies which can guide you in the right direction.

Planting Rates
Planting rates vary between grasses depending on the size of the seed. Each grass seed we offer specifies the planting rate per 1,000 square feet at which the grass seed should be planted. For example, a larger seed such as turf type fescue will be seeded at 10 lbs per 1,000 square feet. A smaller seed such as Kentucky Bluegrass may be seeded as low a 2 lbs per 1,000 square feet. Both of these seeding rates will end up giving you approximately 16 seeds per square inch which is the rate at which lawn grasses should be planted. See each grass seed page of our web site for planting rates, see the bag label when your seed arrives, or check this chart below for the planting rate, germination time, and typical mowing heights.

When to Plant
One of the most common mistakes people make when planting their lawn is they plant too early in the year or too late in the year. Both of these times result in too cold of temperatures for good germination or too close to frost season. You can plant cool season grasses (bent, bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass) earlier in the year than you can warm season grasses (bahia, bermuda, buffalo, carpet, centipede, zoysia). However, for both frost season should be completely over or at least 6 weeks away if planting in late summer/early fall. See chart below for specific planting times.
RECOMMENDED SOIL PLANTING TEMPERATURE
TYPE OF GRASS MINIMUM SOIL TEMP TIME BEFORE FROST (FALL PLANTING)
Bahia Grass 65 Degrees 6 Weeks
Bent Grass – Creeping 55 Degrees 6 Weeks
Bent Grass – Colonial 55 Degrees 6 Weeks
Bermuda Grass – Turf 65 Degrees 6 Weeks
Bermuda Grass – Greens 65 Degrees 6 Weeks
Blue Grama 60 Degrees 10 Weeks
Blue Grass – Turf 55 Degrees 8 Weeks
Blue Grass – Greens 55 Degrees 8 Weeks
Buffalo Grass 60 Degrees 10 Weeks
Carpet Grass 65 Degrees 8 Weeks
Centipede 70 Degrees 10 Weeks
Fescue – Tall 55 Degrees 6 Weeks
Fescue – Fine 55 Degrees 8 Weeks
Rye Grass 55 Degrees 5 Weeks
Zoysia Grass 70 Degrees 10 Weeks
New Lawn: Step by Step
Measure the area to be planted to determine how much seed you are going to need. Example: Length x Width = Total Square Feet (50 feet long x’s 20 feet wide = 1000 square feet. Each grass seed page of our web site offers a grass seed calculator to determine how much seed you need.
Test the soil with a simple pH soil kit to check if you soil is acid or alkaline. If acid (a pH of 6 or less) apply a fast acting dolomite lime at the rate of 50 pounds per 1000 square feet. If alkaline (a pH of 7 or higher) apply a granular gypsum at the rate of 50 lbs per 1,000 square feet. Allow sufficient time for the lime or gypsum to work its way in to the soil.
Level the seed bed to eliminate high or low spots by brining in clean, rich, top soil. Roll to firm the soil. If your ground is very uneven (holes, tunnels, slopes etc.) and you must till, then till the soil to a depth of 4 to 6 inches. If you have heavy clay soils, apply a soil amendment such as gypsum, lime, peat moss, or compost at the recommend package rates. Soil should be loose and clod free when properly prepared. This step is not necessary if your lawn is already at a level (pH, compaction, fertility) as you would like it. Tilling will promote new weed growth and/or grass growth. If you do choose to till, you will need to level the ground, water the soil for several weeks and then spray out any weeds and/or grasses before you plant your grass seed. You may even need to spray out more then once so this process could take a month or more

Apply seed at the recommended seeding rate. We recommend you broadcast or drop spread 1/2 of the seed walking North to South and broadcast or drop spread the other 1/2 of the seed walking East to West. This gives you a nice even spread. You may use an organic starter fertilizer as per directions on the package. Be careful not to over fertilize as this can kill the new seedlings when they sprout. The safest approach would be to simply use LazyMan Soil Doctor for your starter fertilizer.
It is not necessary to cover lawn seed when planting. Many people choose to cover the seed to help retain moisture and help hold seed in place. If you choose to cover the seed, do so with peat moss, fluffy top soil, or clean straw (preferably sterilized straw), at a maximum of 1/4 inch thick or a seed covering per package directions. Coated seed (ie. bermuda, dichondra, microclover, etc.) should not be covered more than 1/8 inch.
Water gently with an oscillating type of sprinkler. KEEP SEED MOIST UNTIL GRASS BEGINS TO GROW. This may mean watering several times a day to keep the seed moist. Then, decrease water frequency but increase the length of each watering. This helps ensure a deep rooted, vigorous lawn.
Do not mow until your lawn is at the recommended height (see chart above). For most grasses this is about 3 – 6 weeks from time of planting. Be gentle!! These new plants are very tender – avoid sharp turns with your lawn mower.
After mowing twice, fertilize with a quality lawn food. Do not apply weed and feed fertilizers for at least 10 weeks and preferably not at all. It is better to use a liquid herbicide to kill your weeds and then an organic fertilizer to keep your soil healthy and for your landscaping project:2013 apluscard
